Accessories - Suspension, wheels, rack and panniers, trailers, exhausts, windscreens.
Back in 2008 I bought a rack for Givi panniers from Canada (it was the only option at the time) The airfreight ended up costing as much as the rack so I looked at other options and found that I could bring in 10 racks for $1,000 freight whereas one had cost me $460 freight. I no longer import racks as there are better and cheaper local sources now but I do bring in batches of other product where feasable, to save on freight costs. For a cheaper option for panniers and other genuine Can Am parts you may like to try http://www.mycanamhouse.com/
NEW PRODUCTSHave you noticed the new Audi and Mercedes cars with the LED rings around the headlights? I am loking at importing something similar for the Spyder (see images below) Also from the same company an electric trunk release that works from a button on the console- no more stopping the motor to open the trunk. The LED rings will be around $80 a pair (in a complete kit) and the trunk release around $70 for the kit. Please let me know if you are interested martin@spyderryders.net.au

New belt guard (GS/RS and RT)
I will soon have stock of a belt guard to save those expensive ($760 from BRP here but cheaper from the US) drive belts from stones .
From Spyderpops who does the "missing air dam " kits. He has tested this for 6,000 KMs and it works well.
I have a shipment flying from the US now and they should sell for $53 inc GST (includes new weld nuts)
Cooler running for GS/RS
Hervey, a Spyder owner in the US who has an auto parts business , has put together a kit to better seal the airgap around the radiator. Reports so far say that in hot weather, when moving, the temperature drops by up to 2 bars.
Hervey says "Professionally Die Cut Neoprene Closed Cell Sponge Pieces ..... through Reverse Engineering processes that includes Cavity/Empty Area measurement to create a product that was “Missing”. Easy to follow (picture/caption) instruction sheet is included along with a tube of very good 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive."
On Spyderlovers.com "Black Widow" says -" I just got one installed and I can tell the difference in the running temp of the spyder from about 35 mph up. You should run two to three bars cooler (when the outside temp gets hot) . I also noticed that when setting in traffic with five bars showing that it only takes a very short distance (once you get moving) for the bars to really fall off. This is obviously due to the increased air flow through the radiator. It looks like something that the factory forgot to put in. Great value for a option that works."
To save on freight from the US I have kits coming in 10 at a time so I generally have them in stock. Current price is $37 Aust including the GST plus $7 postage.
. The kit includes the glue necessary and instructions.
Since I have been running my "Missing air dam" kit (see above) my Spyder has been around 2 to 3 bars on the highway instead of the usual 4 to 5 bars. Those of you who have tried this should have seen the same results - it really works.
Harvey in the US has now expanded that to address the "hot right foot" issue that exists with the 2008-2010 GS and RS with a complete air management system.
This kit (image far right below) contains two parts to properly manage the “HOT” air coming from your radiator and redirecting the “HOT” air out the side vent and not on your foot. Includes a freshly re-designed “E-SCOOP” to force “HOT” air back and out inside the fairing.
The “E-SCOOP” brings in fresh, cooler air with a high velocity causing a blower effect on the air that splits from the radiator to the inside of the fairing which would otherwise be forced back into the radiator.
The “Redirector” is a complex extension of the factory scoop that redirects all of the “HOT” air that the radiator produces out the side vent and splits overflow to the inside of the fairing. This “Redirector” has a foam seal to close the gap that would allow ”HOT” air to otherwise come around the extension. Both parts are made from black polycarbonate to withstand the high temperatures and stay light and strong.
The centre image below shows the “Missing Heat Shield” which also gives added protection to sensitive braking components that were previously exposed to the elements.Designed with foil lined woven fiberglass to deflect the heat and adhered to the inside of precisely formed back Polycarbonate to be light and strong. It attaches to the inside of the right foot guard only, so it will not interfere with removal of service panels. A very easy peel and stick installation with complete instructions.
I will have a few of all these innovative products here shortly- contact me martin@spyderryders.net.au if you are interested..
RT owners - I will be keeping a couple of the replacement "Shortee" 380mm antennas here..
This antenna works exceptionally well for AM, FM and CB reception. Measuring just 15 inches long their built in POWER COIL™ helps provide increased overall length and power, while allowing a sleek low profile, really cleaning up the rear end of your bike.
Also I will have a set of Day Runners here (see right)
The 24 Genesis™ Series Super Bright LEDs in each unit are combined with a tough black aluminum anodized housing for years of trouble free service and good looks.
Having trouble setting the park brake?
Manual Parking Brake Control (shown) for 2008 and 2009 SE5 and SM5 Can Am Spyders. This lever device eliminates the need for dismounting from your Spyder to securely apply and release the parking brake. It requires no alterations to be done to your Spyder. No holes have to be drilled or things like that. This device fits close to the left side of the Spyder body. It has a comfortable rubber grip. It’s easy to apply and release the parking brake while sitting on your Spyder. Included are 3 stainless steel Allen head type bolts. Very simple installation time of 15 minutes. Comes painted in aluminum color. It can be supplied chromed.

Contact Arthur :xe1ll@prodigy.net.mxfor payment instructions.
Include your complete name and street address with your request. He will ship to OZ.
Arthur also offers a "Blocking up device" (not shown) that allows you to raise your Spyder so that you do not bottom out on road slowdown bumps (sleeping policemen) and road irregularities. This item is precision machined and allows you to NOT to have to adjust the rear shock absorber from its middle position to a higher much harder and less comfortable riding position. You stop bottoming out! This item is especially needed if you ride double or have Corbin side bags installed on your Spyder. The special Corbin mounting that holds the right side saddle bag lowers the OEM muffler causing it and its securing band to drag on every road irregularity tearing up the underside of these components. No more. Installation time is about 2 hours, requires some mechanical aptitude, and a floor type jack. Included is one grade 8 bolt with its security nut.
Price including shipping to the lower 48 states is $45.00 US . Contact Arthur : xe1ll@prodigy.net.mx
Looking for more "ooomph" from your Spyder?
Aerocharger say "Our kit is a modular installation consisting of a simple y-pipe swap locating the turbo near the bottom of where the factory muffler resides. Anyone with a decent mechanical knowledge and an average set of hand tools could install it. Each turbo kit is intercooled and comes complete with pre-tuned fuel management, wide-band oxygen sensor, boost gauge, etc. "
I have only heard good reports on their quality and engineering.
Keeping the bugs off! A better windscreen.
If you follow the US forums (Spyderlovers and Spydertalk) you will find that no other subject seems to bring so many different opinions than that windscreens.
In my opinion we are all different sizes and have different riding positions so for a windscreen to be "all things to all people" it really needs to be completely adjustable in angle and height.
The CHAD screen from Industries 7 in Canada performs very well but many people do not like the appearance and fewer still like the $600 plus price! (air freighting really bulky items like this to Australia is simply very expensive)
Mark from Madstad Engineering in the US has just released a very reasonably priced Spyder windscreen system that is adjustable to the extreme as the image below shows. This idea is not new as Madstad have sold thousands of their adjustable bracket sets for the Suzuki V-Strom over the past few years and people swear by them.
Negotiations with Mark at Madstad mean we should be able have a fully adjustable product that is, in my opinion, more aesthetically pleasing (smaller) while still performing well, for hundreds of dollars less than the price of previous offerings !
The brackets are mounted to a powder coated black aluminum plate that fits on the old screen mounts. Because of the unique brackets the screen can be flattened down to just 27mm off of the body or lifted up several inches. There is a huge range of adjustment possible meaning you can use a smaller, better looking screen and still get the results you want..
Here's what one of our Spyder riders had to say about this system: "One of the things I really like about having this bracket is you seem to get more air around the body and feel more like you are really riding a bike instead of a convertible. You get the flow without the tiring body push on the chest which is nice. I think once I found that sweet spot with your sample windshield I got spoiled. I love that little windshield. As many decent positions as I have found with my F1, none match what I had with your sample shield. – D.T."
The clear 20" shield was specially designed for the Spyder and is a thick 4mm for extra stiffness. You might be wondering why would you want this windshield rather than just using your current touring shield with our brackets? The reason is our shield has an even, straight profile which gives you the smoothest airflow. Most aftermarket and accessory touring shields have a lot of curves, humps and irregular shapes that disturb the airflow and don't provide the best results. Our brackets can improve their performance but the smoother the shield design, the smoother the airflow will be. "
One of the first people in the US to try reported on Spyderlovers forum "I have found that with the Robobracket from Madstad and their 20" shield I get the best overall wind protection of any I have tried so far. It is amazing how a smaller shield that looks nice on the spyder does the best job. I sincerely believe it has to do with the adjustability of the brackets, enabling you to set the shield to your preferences."
Brian, the tester in this video (right) , is 6'4" I am told.
" This is a complete drop-in system custom made for the Can-Am Spyder. The base is a black powder-coated aluminum adapter plate that replaces the stock windshield. A set of black RoboBrackets attaches to that metal plate and then a 20" windshield (I will be importing 22" screens as in the image to te left) attaches to the brackets. With the windshield 'detached' from the fairing you now have control over the height, angle and depth of the shield. The results? Smooth airflow placed exactly where you want it. There's no longer a need to hide behind a gigantic fixed touring shield that robs you of mileage and spoils the open air motorcycling experience.
As Tom says on Spyderlovers forum - " I have not tweaked it yet, but there is no buffeting, wind howl/roar from my helmet is gone, air flow is pleasant, and 75 MPH feels and sounds like 35 or 40. I am amazed that such a "small" shield delivers such a good riding environment. I really needed a windshield solution, this is my fourth. I had high expectations for the RoboBrackets, high enough that I knew I could easily be disappointed. That did not happen - they have actually far exceeded what I had hoped for in performance and looks. This is really increasing my Smiles per Miles!"
Custom Dynamics "Street Magic" Bar Riser kits and other innovative Spyder accessories.
I must admit even with the 1" BRP riser I do suffer from the "axe blade between the shoulders" on long rides. For me (6ft) I think its not more height I need rather than to bring the bars back a bit. . I guess that I can only echo what has been said in the US forums. Previously I was sitting close to the tank to get any bend in my arms and I was still getting a pain between my shoulder blades (I am 6ft with a pretty dodgy back) . Now I can sit back in the seat, still have roughly the same body position but bend my arms and relax my shoulders. I guess a longer ride on Sunday will tell me more but it seems great so far. Definitely less effort to turn the bars now and cornering is easier.
Downsides?? Nothing significant. Sure I am nervous cutting of the bars and clamping the risers on but realistically this sort of clamp fitting has been used for years on motorcycles. Rerouting the cables took a little effort and for a while I thought there was no way the reverse cable would make it but it did after I rearranged it (if you do this yourself ring me and I will explain) . Sure the riding position now looks less " sporty" - more "cruiser" style but I am willing to put up with that to be comfortable.
I recommend them if you are not totally satisfied with the standard bars.
To quote Evan "Magic Man" on Spyder lovers forum -
"Ask Lamont, still to this day I have never seen anybody ride a Spyder as hard as him, and he will tell you it handles night and day BETTER. Ask tatt2r as well, he runs it real hard up in NH on some real tight turns and country roads. He too will tell you if handles BETTER with his risers. Spyders ARE NOT SPORT BIKES! What might seem like "Joe Racer" seating on a sport bike DOES NOT WORK on a Spyder!
On sport bikes you lean forward to the bars, and once moving at more than a walking speed turn the bike by LEANING it over. Other than a very small amount of "counter steer," your arms once locked into this riding position on a sport bike never move until you once again slow down. Spyder's, like snowmobiles, Sea-Doos, ATVs must have the bars turned to make the unit turn! It is not possible the way the human body works to turn the bars with all this weight on your hands. You must remove some to almost all of your weight from you hands with your "core" muscles (lower back and stomach) to allow you to make your hands "light enough to turn the Spyder.
Besides all this movement taking time to occur, it also wears out the driver very quickly. This tired driver then begins to become slower, or sloppier as they can no longer respond as quickly because of this fatigue factor. This might not be so bad if you ar 20 something, but for us "more mature" (aka old guys) it can make the Spyder 'less than ideal" for long fast rides. Also, sitting in that bent over of a position, with that much hand pressure for very long is not much fun for us old guys ether. When risers are installed the driver is sitting without so much hand pressure. Which means the driver is no longer forced to have to constantly adjust the weight on their hands to turn the Spyder, and is then able to respond quicker, with less effort over a longer period of time (longer ride) "
Available in 3" SM5 (if you already have the BRP 1" riser), 4" SM5 and 4" SE5. Also available are sets of billet bolt caps to tidy the installation up.
Spyder LED Front Turn Signals
Super bright AMBER Genesis LEDs Street Magic® front turn signal pods replace the stock incandescent turn-signals with super-bright, amber, Genesis™ LED’s. Increase your communication with other motorists and BE SAFE, BE SEEN™. Note* these replace the entire pod as shown, not just the lamps.
Safety and visibility are greatly increased with the Double Play™. The unit installs easily and makes your front turn-signals operate as running lights, while still retaining their signal function. For use in conjunction with the high-output Genesis™ LED front turn-signal pods.
**NEW MIRROR EXTENSIONS**
Find you cannot see whats behind you and it gets worse when you raise the bars? These extensions will not only move the mirriors out, but also up as well, allowing for a far greater view.
When designing these extensions Evan found that was as important to raise the mirror height as well as move them outward to truely improve the rearward view.
Evan wanted the ESI Up & Out Extensions to incorporate as much "form" as they did "function." In as much, the 3D design and CNC programing of these extensions took almost 10 months to get the fit and look just right.
The ESI Up & Out Extensions are made of billet T6061 Aircraft grade aluminum and feature the latest 3D CNC machining and design techniques to produce a one piece core block with a smooth body blending design looking almost factory once installed with a textured black powder-coated finish
I have these in stock now.
I now have stock of the new STREET MAGIC High Flow Lifetime Spyder Air Filter
This High Performance Reusable Spyder Air Filter is exclusively manufactured in the USA for Custon Dynamics. Unlike some other "no-name" filters out there, this high performance filter is made exclusively for No Magic Neon by GREEN FILTER, an industry leader in high performance reusable air filters worldwide.
This filter is designed to have twice the air flow compared to the stock filter, while cleaning out even the toughest dust and dirt. Your motor gains the performance, while your wallet gains the savings. All this AND it comes with a limited lifetime guarantee.
They have a more rigid frame than the stock filter and have a better seal onto the air box (some people on the forums have reported dirt in the air box because the original paper filter did not seal well on the air box)
One comment from a US forum. "just installed NMN new lifetime air filter and ill tell you it's worth the money ,,,,never mind you will never have to replace it but performance is very noticeable ...i had update done ...ran great ...then installed a cold air intake ...ran better ...then installed new NMN filter and {{{{{{BANG}}}}} power plus .... i drive my spyder like a stole it ....and what a difference .... 75 miles an hour on highway gunning the throttle i can get my front suspension to almost bounce dee was driving along side of me and i started revving up and down the throttle and she said that the suspension on the front of my spyder was lifting ..... amazing power increase ...going to go for juicebox next .... when i'm sure what works i'll install same in dee's spyder... so it may not have BLING but NMN air filter is well worth it for performance."
The Street Magic LED Rear Turn Signal Kit converts your rear turn signals to Super-Bright, Genesis™ Amber LEDs . Increase your visibility and communication with other motorists. (electronics included to "fool" the Spyders computer which usually won't accept LED's) "Plug and Play".
* Note - I generally keep small quantities of 3" and 4" risers, air filters and cleaning kits. With the other products shown I may only keep one or two but can allways include them with my next stock order if you are interested.
Spyder Nose & Tail Emblems
These come in a set of two to replace the BRP logos on the nose and tail (will also fit with the Sports Rack).
Exhaust Pipes for Spyder
90º Polished Stainless Steel Elbow Exhaust Pipe for Can Am Spyder 2 ¼ “ outlet to fit after-market slip-on mufflers.
Cruise Control
Hi Martin,
I have recently installed cruise controls on two spyders and have taken on the dealer/installer in my area.
I am this week installing on two BMW's as well. The units are computerised and the only fully electronic unit available,as I am led to believe. On the Spyder there just work perfectly as delivered without any further calibration. The company is in Melbourne and send the unit in kit form, within 2 days or so. with all instructions.
The instructions are so complete the owner should be able to do the installation himself if he is competent with a spanner. It involves striping all the fairing off the bike and involves maybe 8 hours work, thats why I am doing installations, which costs around $350.00au. If anyone wants the details please contact me. See the PDF document for your information..

Erik's trailer
Got the new design trailer from Classic Industries, this is the smallest trailer they have, enough for all our camping gear, Installed a towbar from Classic Industires at Yandina … these guys are really great, they had to do modifications on their current Spyder towbar as I had the Givi panniers mounted (The rack frame was the problem) but now it’s sorted out and they have a towbar available for people with Givi panniers.
Also some modifications on the number plate holder as the number plate was behind the towbar … I still need to make a rubber mudflap to cover the spot where the number plate used to be.
The indicators touching the panniers was also a problem, and I made some brackets to bring the indicators backwards, I did install some smaller indicators, but I didn’t like it, they looked to small on the bike and of course you need extra reflectors ….. so I put the original back on with the bracket.
I am still thinking of the reversing light …… as this is still ugly (I think)
Cheers. Erik
Considering a seat upgrade?
Initially I thought the wide Spyder seat was great but having done some longer rides I find it quite uncomfortable putting all the pressure on the centre and not supporting my "ample" buttocks (its not just me as Marion's diminutive posterior was complaining as well) . I had heard some good reports for John Moorehouse's Ergo Seats in Brisbane and I found John could rework my seat for a small fraction of the cost of a Corbin or similar.
John has you photograph your seating position, and your pillions as well, and he reworks the seat to suit using high quality materials. The finish looks great and feels much more supportive, spreading the load more than the standard seat. Like other manufacturers John says it will feel firm until it beds in (around 1,000 km) but he has a "comfort guarantee" where he will work with you to make any adjustments needed for full satisfaction.
You can contact John on (07) 3245 3979 and its quite common for people to send him their seat from where ever they are in Australia along with some photos so he can work his magic. I will add more when Marion and I have had a few longer rides.
John Rose emails - "If anyone is interested in getting their seat modified the same as yours and doesn't want to part with their own seat while it is undertaken, I have an original Spyder seat here, which I am quite happy to sell to anyone at a negotiated price." Email John at john@jandar.com.au
John Rose has fitted a Corbin seat, backrests and "glove box".
Hi Martin, Attached are some photos of my new Corbin seat with backrests and glovebox.
Only arrived this week after ordering some 16 weeks ago.
Both Robyn and I are really impressed with it.
Prorider had a ride on today to Lake Macquarie and back with about 25 Spyders taking part, many two up (There will be some photos on the Prorider Web site next week.)
We went around 300 k today and no hint of a sore backside or back which I was struggling with most of the time before over any distance.
The seat holds you quite well, but allows you to move if you want to.
The backrest for the rider is really brilliant and the pillion one is better than all others that I have tried.
After lunch at the 16' sailing club at Belmont, I had a line up of women wanting to try the seat out for comfort. See also http://www.corbin.com/can-am/
Cruise Control
Martin,
MCCruise of Melbourne now make a model specific cruise control for the Spyder. See the following link. I fitted a MCCruise cruise control to my Trophy, and it was brilliant. They look like they are part of the bike, mot an add on. They are specifically made for motorcycles, not converted car ones. I have no vested interest in this company, just a very satisfied customer. Yes. I will be fitting one myself. Thought this would be of interest to readers of the spyderriders web site

Canadian Elka Suspension for the Spyder is distibuted by Hardiman ATV Pty Ltd on the NSW Central Coast .
Custom built and handcrafted - see a PDF brochure. They have remote reservoirs and claim less body roll, 1"more front suspension travel, a smoother ride, tuned for the riders weight and riding style, better stability and traction.
Note* HIGH- AND LOW-SPEED COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENT
Elka Suspension’s Elite compression adjustment is an internal cartridge with two distinct circuits that control the hydraulic resistance for both high-velocity and low-velocity oil displacement. This enables very advanced fine-tuning for different types of impacts that would otherwise require the rider to make a compromise between a more comfortable softer suspension and a high-performance harder suspension.
With our Elite compression adjustment, the rider can have the suspension set to react differently for high-speed situations and low-speed situations at the same time.
SIMPLY PUT, THE ELITE COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENT IS LIKE HAVING TWO SHOCKS IN ONE: IT REACTS DIFFERENTLY ACCORDING TO THE VELOCITY OF THE IMPACT
All Elka shocks are custom built to rider weight and style of riding, they are built to order and they will take 2-3 weeks to receive once the order is placed. For more info phone: (02) 4353 3622 and tell them you saw it here.
UPDATE 13/11/08- I got sick of waiting so regardless of the poor Ozzie dollar I just ordered my Elka shocks. Hopefully in a few weeks I will have a report for you.
Meanwhile "Tarantula" says -"I just installed my ELKA suspension. And its amazing the difference it has made. Hardly ever do I get the VSS nanny bugging me anymore and no more wheel lift.
Yup....ever since I got the Spyder I've been wondering how long it would take for someone to share the secret of how to disconnect the VSS Nanny, so that some of us could finally have some fun. The trick is very simple...replace the front shocks. Ever since I replaced my front suspension for the ELKA's about 5 days ago....I noticed the nanny has been quite silent. She allows me to take sharp turns from a standstill and give it gas without hearing the Nanny Stutter and mumble. Seriously I haven't heard a peep out of her since I put the new suspension on. I just wanted to share."
UPDATE 11/12/08 - Received the Elka suspension - they are a real "work of art" (see image below) and appear to be of very high quality. Image on the right below shows the mounting of the remote reservoir and high & low speed damping adjustment.
The rear unit has a hyrdraulic preload adjustment (see below) . I mounted the rear remote reservior and preload adjuster near the pillion footrest.
You can download the installation instructions PDF here . It will take some time for me to get some thoughts together. An initial ride seemed much smoother and the Spyder seems to corner with more precision, its easier to keep a line through the corner and it makes me much more confident cornering at speed. Will let you know more when I get some miles on them.
Because of the various systems available and the fluctuating Ozzie dollar you need to talk to Shane (02) 4353 3622 for pricing. They are not cheap but they seem of excellent quality and workmanship - its amazing to compare them to the BRP shocks when you remove them!
Improve your handling?
If you want to improve your Spyder's handling my first choice would be Ken Zellers stiffer sway bar (see our Accessories page or http://www.evoluzione.net ) - it is the best "bang for your buck" and recommend by many. It stops most of the body roll in corners and keeps the Spyder flatter on the road.
After that the suspension is the next step. Bob from Tassy tells me Ikon Suspension here in Australia can help too. "The shocks have upgraded progressive rate springs and screw thread pre-load adjustment. Both are rebuild able and the front also have a 4 position rebound adjustment. The prices are AUD$800.00 a pair on the front and AUD$950.00 on the rear plus shipping." Contact Ikon on (02) 6040 9955 or see www.ikonsuspension.com. Thanks for the tip Bob.
When I fit the Elka suspension I also want to try the "Evoluzione" sway bar.
"This adjustable swaybar was developed for the performance minded owner who would like to improve the front end feel while maintaining a comfortable ride. this swaybar will help to improve cornering by maintaining a more level attitude of the spyder through corners."
Ken of Evoluzione comments- "a stiffer bar reduces the tendency of the spyder to want to lift the inside front tire. it has to do with roll center (location of the bikes center of gravity)."
UPDATE 02/10/08- I have had the new swaybar on for just 24 hours but it is great! I was running the front shocks on 5 to help stop roll in corners but now have them on 4, with the new swaybar on its softer setting and the handling is improved - the Spyder stays flatter in the corners. The front suspension does not seem mushy in the corners now- much more precise. I recomend the change!
Ken does lots of neat Spyder products like a low-effort clutch slave cylinder for the Can-Am Spyder. this unit was developed to reduce the clutch effort pull by ~20%. in addition, it also allows a smoother engagement due to an elongated throw (much cleaner take-offs from a stop). the kit comes complete with easy to follow instructions and we even supply a bleeder bottle to help you quickly finish the job. ($140US)
Steve Melchior of Elite Campers has a camper trailer he has developed for the Spyder. Contact him at Elite Campers - Phone. 02 42314520 or 1300 857100 Mobile 0414942598 Email. elitecampersnsw@optusnet.com.au
